Aviary, the suite of online applications we mentioned back in June, has announced that it will begin offering two paid subscription plans, beginning November 5. They will continue to offer a free version, as well.

The plans are:

  • Blue, $14.99 per month, or $149.90 per year, and
  • Green, $7.99 per month

The free option will continue to allow access to the entire Aviary suite, but will include some advertising, watermarked images, and is limited to personal use only. There is a $50 discount on the Blue plan, which expires tomorrow, November 4.

Since we first reported on Aviary back in June, two applications have been added. Peacock is a node-based filter editor, and Toucan is a tool for creating color schemes. A vector drawing tool, Raven, is available in alpha release to Blue subscribers only. There are 11 additional applications currently in development. You can see the list here.

Online applications such as Aviary promise an alternative to desktop applications such as Photoshop and Illustrator. The concept of SaaS (software as a service) has been gaining traction with small business owners who can’t afford their own in-house IT staffs. It remains to be seen whether photographers and graphic designers will take to the idea.
