Tutorial: How Cloning Works in Corel Painter

The results are in, and the results are very positive! Thanks, everyone!
Thanks to everyone who voted during the past month on the poll. To the question “Would you be interested in a downloadable book on Painter?”, about 80% said yes. Many of you may be wondering if the book would be free, or if it would cost something. The short answer is there is a lot more free content on the way, including (finally) video tutorials. The long answer is that I hope to gather these videos together, along with a PDF book, that I would offer for sale on the site. You will be able to view all of the videos for free here on Digital Image Magazine. You will also be able to purchase a DVD containing all of the videos, PLUS a PDF book which brings together, and expands, the tutorials on the site. Since it’s just me doing all this, and I do have a day job, I would expect it will be awhile before the DVD is available. In the meantime, today I’m proud to present my very first video!
This first video is a short explanation of the basics of cloning in Corel Painter. It’s a video for the complete beginner. Later videos will get into more advanced topics. Cloning can be difficult to explain, since it’s quite unique. It’s probably the biggest hurdle newbies encounter when getting started with Painter. I know that once I figured out cloning, six years ago, a light went on and suddenly all became clear. I hope this video sheds some light for you, too.
I would love to hear your thoughts about this video, and the plans outlined above for a DVD, as well as the new, free tutorials on the way. I’ve spent the last few weeks giving myself a crash course in “screencasting,” bought a microphone, screen-capture software, and now I’m diving in. I expect the quality of these tutorials will get better as I get better at recording.
Feel free to pass this video along to friends. Thanks!

I’m surprised that anyone thought your e-book might be free. You’ve already provided a phenomenal amount of excellent free material on digital painting. You’re one of the best resources out there, and your contributions to the art community can’t be overstated. I’m really looking forward to expanded tutorials, and will gladly pay for them. And I can’t wait for more videos–your first one is a peach . . . um . . . apple!

Thanks so much for your comment, and taking time to let me know your thoughts. That’s very helpful, and encouraging. I do try to provide value to my readers, but it’s hard to tell how it is being received. So again, thank you.
