If you follow the steps, you are copying an existing brush and saving it with a new name. You are simply adding a new brush to a brush category, which should not affect how Painter starts up. Try this: just do Step One, and then close Painter. See if it starts now. If you have a problem with that, there may be something else going on. Hard to solve from across the ocean!
